Stargazing (SG) in corn snakes is a recessively inherited disease which cause neurological symptoms, movement disorders in homozigous form. The animals makes uncontrolled movements, they twist their heads and necks and look upwards towards the sky (like they were gazing stars), animals have great difficulty if they are laid on their back (it takes them some time to realise they are upside down); it is made worse in stressful situations like hangling or feeding.

Stargazer corns eat, shed, poop quite normally, they can also breed just as normal corns do. In spite of it is not contagious nor deadly for the animals. It is, however, a genetic failure that you do not want in your collection.

Many people think that SG is only present in Sunkissed morphs (as the Stargazing gene was first linked with the Sunkissed morph), however the gene can be present in any morph (like Okeetee).

Carrier (heterozigous) animals show no visible signs of SG. The way to find out if a snake is clear of Stargazing is to breed with a (hom.) Stargazing cornsnake or alternatively breed to a KNOWN het. Stargazing cornsnake and have no Stargazers in the clutch. Dedicated people are working on identifying markers in the DNA for the hetrozygous form of the Stargazer gene and then to develop a PCR test that any lab in the world can run.
